A simpler alternative to OBS if you only record your screen
OBS Studio is free, open source and very capable, built for streaming with scenes and sources. If all you want is to press Record, Myna Screen Recorder is a smaller tool for that one job. It does not stream.
Updated 20 October 2026 · Free with a Myna account; the full version is optional.
1. The short answer
If you only record your screen, Myna Screen Recorder is one bar: choose what to record, a frame rate and a quality, and press Record. There are no scenes to build and no sources to add. It records the screen, a window, an area or a frame that follows the mouse, and it can copy a share link when you stop.
If you stream, or want scenes, plugins or a virtual camera, stay with OBS. Myna has none of those.
2. Keep OBS if
- You stream live. Myna records; it does not broadcast.
- You build scenes from several sources, such as windows, cameras and images, and switch between them.
- You rely on plugins or on the virtual camera.
- You use a Mac or Linux. Myna runs on Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) and Windows 11, 64-bit.
- You want a tool that needs no account at all. OBS is free with nothing to sign in to.
3. Where a recorder-only tool is simpler
- Open the capture bar and pick Screen, Window or Region.
- Choose a frame rate and a quality.
- Press Record.
Any frame rate works and it is never capped to your monitor's refresh rate. PC sound and your microphone are recorded on one clock, with noise reduction, push-to-talk and separate WAV tracks if you want them. OBS can reach similar results with filters and several audio tracks, with more setup.
The capture bar with its video panel open. Indistinguishable quality is part of the full version.

5. Formats and quality
Myna records hardware-encoded MP4. Without an account it records up to 720p at 30 fps and 5 minutes. A free account raises that to 1080p at 60 fps with no length limit, at Small or Balanced quality in H.264, and still adds no watermark.
The full version records up to 4K at 240 fps, adds High and Indistinguishable quality, Lossless (MKV), HEVC and AV1, and comes with Myna Cloud storage from $6 a month. A new account starts with a 7-day trial.
Recording is hardware-encoded, so it uses your graphics card's encoder, and the card must support Direct3D 11. OBS can use a hardware encoder as well, if you choose one in its output settings. How much load either puts on your PC depends on your hardware and settings, so check on yours: record for a minute with Task Manager open.
6. Questions
Is Myna a free OBS alternative?
Partly. A free Myna account records at any length, up to 1080p at 60 fps, with no watermark. OBS is free with no account at all, and Myna's full version, from $6 a month, is paid. Without an account Myna is limited to 720p at 30 fps and 5 minutes.
Can Myna stream?
No. Myna Screen Recorder records, and it can copy a share link when you stop, but it does not broadcast live. For streaming, use OBS.
Does Myna add a watermark?
No. There is no watermark, with or without an account.
Can Myna record at a high frame rate?
Yes. Any frame rate works and it is never capped to your monitor's refresh rate. A free account records up to 60 fps and the full version up to 240 fps.
Does it work on a Mac or on Linux?
No. It runs on Windows 10 (version 2004 or later) and Windows 11, 64-bit, with a graphics card that supports Direct3D 11.
Why use something other than OBS to record?
If you never stream and find scenes and sources more than you need, a recorder-only tool is quicker to start. If you stream, or build scenes, OBS is still the right tool.
